William L. Schreiber (center) is vice president of R&D and director of fragrance synthesis research at International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF; 1515 Highway 36, Union Beach, NJ 07735; 908-888-2431). Previously, he held several research positions at IFF. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester and did postdoctoral work at the Rockefeller University. He has published several articles and holds patents in the areas of organic photochemistry and the synthesis of flavor and fragrance materials.


Lewis G. Scharpf, Jr., (right) is director of flavor research at IFF. Previously, he worked at Monsanto in various research positions. His research interests are food, flavor, and fermentation chemistry, and he holds 20 patents and has published 30 articles in these fields. He has a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Iowa State University.


Ira Katz (left) is director of research and development at the IFF basic research center. Previously, he was on the faculty at the University of Maryland. At IFF, he held various research positions before assuming his present one. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland.
