—Chemical Abstracts Service (Joint with Council) “” The Committee on Chemical Abstracts Service (CCAS) met in executive session on March 25 and in open session jointly with the Joint Board-Council Committee on Publications on March 28. CAS management reported on a number of developments including 2010 database milestones: More than 5.6 million small molecules were added to the CAS Registry last year for a total of 56.1 million.

—Manuel Guzman Named New President Of Chemical Abstracts Service “He will succeed Robert J. Massie on Sept. 30” The next president of Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) will be Manuel (Manny) Guzman, effective Sept. 30. He succeeds Robert J. Massie, who has led CAS for more than 21 years and who is retiring at the end of March 2014. Based in Columbus, Ohio, CAS is a global leader in chemical information and is a division of the American Chemical Society, which publishes C&EN. Guzman was most recently executive vice president of learning and research products and international operations at Cengage Learning, which provides teaching, learning, and research products and services for academic, professional, and library markets worldwide.

—In Praise Of Chemical Abstracts Service “” IN A RECENT LETTER to the editor, I decried the loss of books from library collections, noting that SciFinder has only 65% of the information available as an alternative (C&EN, Aug. 18, page 6). I am happy to report that after attending a recent CAS Americas conference, it is clear that Chemical Abstracts Service is making aggressive efforts to be as comprehensive as possible, and my estimate is well out of date.

I really enjoyed the C&EN article on the history of Chemical Abstracts Service. The essay also brought back memories of the time when I was a volunteer abstractor in the early 1960s while attending graduate school. I found the work quite interesting, especially when I was asked to translate and write abstracts from German patents on explosives developed during World War II. I never knew there were thousands of fellow volunteers writing abstracts for the service in those days. The service has been important and valuable for everyone working in a scientific profession. Future generations of scientists should be grateful to the people who pioneered its development and to those who helped it evolve into a modern information tool.

—People Who Come To CAS Rarely Leave “” I was born in Ohio, and after I got my Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1965, I had thought about returning to Ohio and working for Chemical Abstracts Service. Instead, I took a job as an organic research chemist at DuPont, but CAS popped into my mind again since I had been using the service as part of my research.
