FAQ #1
What PDF readers are supported by
the ACS Paragon Plus Environment?
ACS Paragon Plus is optimized for Adobe Acrobat Reader versions
6.0 and 7.0 for Windows and Mac OSX, and version 5.0 for Mac OS9. You can
obtain a free copy of the Reader from the Adobe website.

FAQ #2
Why does it sometimes take
so long to display the PDF version of a manuscript?
The first time you access the PDF version of a manuscript that was submitted
in the Paragon system, ACS Paragon Plus recreates the PDF file from the
original source files. For larger manuscripts, this process can take a
significant amount of time and you may have to wait several minutes. This
will happen only the first time you try to access the file.

FAQ #3
A PDF of my supplementary file
is not produced, even when I converted it previously to PDF. What
happened?
Supplementary files do not get included with the PDF proof of the
main document. There is a separate file designation for Supporting
Information files, and there will be a separate PDF created for the
reviewer and for publication (if appropriate).

FAQ #4
The journal instructions were
specific about the size of the graphic I am to upload with my manuscript. I
uploaded the specific graphic size, but when I view my proof in PDF or
HTML format the size has changed.
The
HTML and PDF proofs are intended for reviewers to view. Do not worry about
your file size being different for the proof files. Your original file
with the correct size was also submitted to the journal and will be
formatted properly.

FAQ #5
I have a problem downloading or
uploading PDF files I have either co-authored or am reviewing. I use
ZoneAlarm as a personal firewall. How should I configure ZoneAlarm so I
am able to access these files?
This
probably has to do with your Cookie settings. Reset your ZoneAlarm
Pro cookies by following these instructions:
Open ZoneAlarm.
Select Privacy in Cookie Control.
Click Custom.
Under 3rd Party Cookie deselect the Remove Private
Header Information checkbox.
Click Apply.
Close the program.
Restart your computer.
Log into ACS Paragon Plus again and try to download
or upload the PDF file again.

FAQ #6
The HTML proof is displaying
code, but the PDF proof is accurate. What should I do?
If an
author labels the graphics tags with simple numerals, 1, 2, 3,
etc., these basic ASCII characters cause the code to be displayed.
Labeling the images as Figure 1, Image 1, etc., will correct this problem.
|
FAQ #7
I received a "Type 3 font" error
during PDF creation. What should I do?
The
problem is that Type 3 fonts are actually bitmaps. Bitmapped fonts
display poorly onscreen in PDF files and sometimes cause printing
problems. We recommend that you substitute Adobe Postscript Type 1 fonts
for any bitmap fonts (e.g., Postscript Type 3 bitmapped fonts, PCL fonts,
MacOS bitmap fonts, Windows vector or outline fonts). Type 1 fonts
display much better than Type 3 fonts, even though Type 1
fonts may print the same as Type 3 fonts.

FAQ #8
I have
uploaded a Word document that was converted to PDF through the ACS
Paragon Plus Environment. However, when I view the proof of the
submission, the mu and micro symbols appear as alpha or infinity symbols.
I have verified that the Greek characters were inserted into the Word
document using Symbol font. What can I do?
The
problem might be with your version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, which should
be version 5.x or later. You can upload the latest version from the Adobe website. After installation,
re-open the PDF proof of your manuscript. Your symbols should now display
properly.

FAQ #9
There are sections in the HTML
proof for my manuscript submission where the font size and/or style is
different from the rest of the text. It appears normally in the Word
document and in the online PDF proofs. How can I fix this?
This
problem occurs because Microsoft Word automatically applies Heading
styles to the text in your Word document. Some of these styles are also
used to format text when it is displayed in an HTML page and when they
are converted to HTML, your browser automatically applies text and
paragraph formatting that might vary from how it appears in Word.
Resolve this problem by modifying the style setting for the affected text
in your Word document and re-upload the file. Do this by highlighting the
affected text and changing it using one of the methods below: On the top
toolbar, select Format > Styles or Format > Styles and Formatting. Choose
a style other than a Heading from the dropdown list. Click Apply. If you
have the Formatting toolbar activated, click the dropdown list for the
style (located to the left of the font and font size dropdown lists) and
choose a style other than a Heading.

FAQ #10
I have
uploaded the file for my manuscript submission, but the HTML and PDF
proofs do not appear properly. What could be the problem?
One
reason could be that your files do not have file extensions. All
Microsoft-based operating systems use file extensions to designate the
type of file, which allow files to open in the correct programs. This is
also how file types are determined on the Internet.
(On a Mac, file extensions are not necessary.) If your filenames do not end
with the appropriate file extension, this can cause problems with the
conversion of your documents and ultimately with the viewing your
manuscript proof. You should add file extensions to the end of the file
name for all documents you upload to Paragon Plus Environment.
|
FAQ #11
Why are the
HTML and PDF proof screens not showing up on the last step of my
manuscript submission?
Difficulty viewing the HTML and PDF proofs are most commonly caused
by popup-blocking software. Popup-blocking software is so common now
that Web browsers such as Netscape 7 and even the Google toolbar
come installed with them. We recommend that you disable popup-blocking
software when using the ACS Paragon Plus Environment.
