Frequently Asked Questions
| FAQ #1 |
Am I
already registered in the ACS Paragon Plus Environment?
If you
were registered in Paragon, then you are registered in ACS Paragon Plus,
providing you have been an author or reviewer for a journal that is now
using ACS Paragon Plus.
|
| FAQ #2 |
How do I log in to
the ACS Paragon Plus Environment?
with the same User ID and Password you used for Paragon. After
logging in, click on "Edit Your Account" (beside your name), to ensure
that your account information transferred correctly.
|
| FAQ #3 |
Why am I being prompted to update
my account information?
Paragon
does not contain all of the fields that are required in the new ACS
Paragon Plus Environment, so you are being asked to enter the additional
required fields and update your account information.
|
| FAQ #4 |
Where did you get
my account information to put into ACS Paragon Plus?
We
transferred the information you provided for Paragon and
supplemented it with information the ACS Journal Offices compile when
they receive manuscripts.
|
| FAQ #5 |
Have all
journals been transferred to the ACS Paragon Plus Environment?
No. The ACS Paragon Plus Environment is replacing the ACS Paragon System, on a journal-by-journal basis.
See Which System Should I Use? for a list of journals using the new system.
|
| FAQ #6 |
Can I continue to
submit manuscripts and reviews for journals that are still in Paragon?
Yes, you can continue to use your
Paragon account with the same User ID and Password you use now. However, the
two systems are completely separate, so if you change your User ID or Password
in one system, the change will not be conveyed to the other.
|
| FAQ #7 |
Why is my
e-mail address listed as "made_up_email1@acs.org" in ACS
Paragon Plus?
If you
had no e-mail address in Paragon (or it was invalid), or we
could not confirm your e-mail address based on information in the
internal ACS Journal Office system, you were given a temporary e-mail
address. Please change it to a valid e-mail address as soon as possible.
|
| FAQ #8 |
Why does
the system sometimes log me out when I click my browser's Back
button?
The use
of the Back button is not supported in the ACS Paragon Plus
Environment. Please use the navigation links located on each page to
return to a previous page. If you inadvertently click on the Back
button, you may be logged out of the system, but there is no danger of
losing your work. Simply log in again and continue working.
|
| FAQ #9 |
Who do I contact for support?
You may
continue to contact the ACS Help
Desk with any issues or questions that you have.

Transition Issues for Authors
| FAQ #10 |
How do I
submit a manuscript, if I have already begun the manuscript submission in
Paragon
If
you have already begun submission in Paragon, simply complete that
submission in Paragon by the deadline that has been communicated to you
by e-mail. If you don’t complete the submission in Paragon by that
deadline, you will have to start a new submission in the ACS Paragon Plus
Environment. If you complete your submission by the deadline, the
manuscript will be transferred to ACS Paragon Plus with the same status
that it carries in Paragon. For example, if the manuscript is waiting for
reviewers to be selected in Paragon, after the transfer, it will be
waiting for reviewers to be selected in ACS Paragon Plus.
|
| FAQ #11 |
How do I
find a manuscript I authored previously?
to ACS Paragon Plus and click the "My Authoring
Activity" tab.You will see a list of activities called
"queues".All of your manuscripts that have been accepted or
rejected will be in the "Manuscripts with Decisions"
queue.Withdrawn manuscripts will be found in the "Withdrawn
Manuscripts" queue. Manuscripts needing revision will be in either
the "Manuscripts with Decision" queue (if the revision hasn’t
been started) or the "Revised Manuscripts in Draft" queue (if
the revision has been started).
|
| FAQ #12 |
Where are
the Author Guidelines?
|
| FAQ #13 |
What
are the major differences in submitting a manuscript to ACS Paragon Plus?
Authors
can now add their own co-authors for a manuscript on the
"Authors & Institutions" page, using one of two methods. If
the co-authors are registered in ACS Paragon Plus, enter a valid e-mail
address in ACS Paragon Plus and search for each record. If you cannot
locate the co-author by this method, you can enter all of the data for
your co-authors, and they will be added to ACS Paragon Plus. Co-authors
who wish to create accounts associated with the e-mail addresses you
enter will be able to track the manuscript’s progress on their own ACS Paragon
Plus home pages.
Authors no longer have to submit PDF versions of their word processor or
other files. ACS Paragon Plus will create these for authors incorporating
all appropriate documents.
LaTeX authors no longer need to provide a PDF version of their
manuscripts. By submitting all of the appropriate resource files, authors will have
a PDF prepared for them. See the specific instructions for submitting LaTeX
files
|
| FAQ #14 |
What
submission requirements haven’t changed?
Authors
must still enter three reviewer names with a submission
Specifying the Manuscript Type is still required and the types
have not changed
Authors must still specify if the manuscript cites any
unpublished work
Authors must still specify the section in which the manuscript
should be published
Authors must still verify that they have read the ACS Ethical Guidelines
Authors must still verify that they have not submitted the
manuscript elsewhere
Corresponding authors must still provide a Copyright Status Form that
has been signed by hand (no electronic signatures are allowed). However,
authors have the option of uploading a PDF or TIFF version of the manually
signed form at the time of submission, selecting "Completed Copyright Form"
as the file designation.
|
| FAQ #15 |
Why are
there two options for the main manuscript file upload?
You
can choose to submit your manuscript with all of the graphics
embedded in the manuscript or you can submit the text of the manuscript
without the graphics embedded. In the latter case, you would submit the
graphics as separate files.

Transition Issues for Reviewers
| FAQ #16 |
When I try
to log into the ACS Paragon Plus Environment to review a manuscript, I
get a message saying "User Account Needs Updating," and the
system won't let me log in. Why is this happening?
If a
Journal Editor created your ACS Paragon Plus reviewer account for you,
you will receive this message when you first log in. You must update
your Account information in order to create all of the data needed by the
system.
|
| FAQ #17 |
How
do I submit a review, if I have begun the review outside of Paragon
and had not intended to submit it electronically?
You
should complete the review and send it to the Journal Office by your
normal method: regular mail or e-mail, etc. They will take care of making
sure it ends up where it should.
|
| FAQ #18 |
How do I
find a manuscript I reviewed previously in Paragon?
Previous
reviews submitted via Paragon and their associated manuscripts will not
be available in ACS Paragon Plus. In your "Reviewing Assigment"
tab on your Home page, you will see a list of activities called "queues".
All manuscripts that you review in ACS Paragon Plus will be in one of
these queues. Manuscripts that you have been asked to review but for
which you have not submitted a review will be in the "Review and
Score" queue. Manuscripts for which a review is past the deadline
will be in the "Overdue Reviews" queue. Initially there will be
no entries in the "Scores Submitted" queue. As you submit
reviews in ASC Paragon Plus, they will be captured and tracked in your
"Scores Submitted" queue.

| FAQ #19 |
Where are
the Reviewer Guidelines?
|
| FAQ #20 |
What do I
do if I submitted a review of a manuscript in Paragon and I’ve been asked
to review the revision in ACS Paragon Plus?
to ACS Paragon Plus with the same User ID and Password that you
used for Paragon. If you did not have a User ID and Password for Paragon,
or if you have trouble logging in to ACS Paragon Plus, contact the ACS
Help Desk. If you prefer not to create an account in ACS Paragon
Plus, you can access the manuscript through the link provided in the e-mail
asking you to review the revision.
|
| FAQ #21 |
What are
the major differences in reviewing a manuscript in the new system?
The
reviewer form looks different and is called a "score sheet".
Please don’t assume things are in the same location as they were on
the Paragon reviewer form.
You don’t have to restrict your comments to a certain number of
characters.
Attaching files is permissible and easily accomplished.
