Submission and Authoring in ACS Paragon Plus
Specifications for Web Enhanced Objects
The Web editions of the ACS journals allow authors to make use of
multimedia attachments as Web Enhanced Objects to enhance the
understanding of the research being reported in their manuscripts. Web
Enhanced Objects should be submitted at the same time as the original
article. When creating Web Enhanced Objects, consideration should be
given to the time that will be required for the reader to download the
file. The maximum file size should not exceed 5 MB.
The following file types are currently acceptable as Web Enhanced
Objects in ACS journals. Should you have a file type that is not on this
list but you feel should be considered for a Web Enhanced Object, please
contact paragonplus@acs.org.
Graphics
Authors may use color for Web graphics. The artwork should be designed
to be easily viewable within 640 X 480 pixels.
The following file formats are acceptable:
Text
Bulky data or extensive experimental details should be provided as
text files in one of the following formats:
- Plain Text (txt)
- Adobe Acrobat (pdf)
- Microsoft Word (doc or rtf)
- WordPerfect (rtf)
- Excel (xls)
- Microsoft Word template (dot)
- Word Perfect (wpd)
3D Images
Data from crystallographic modeling studies should be presented in a
form that will allow the reader to interact with the structure. The
following formats are acceptable:
- CIF (Crystallographic Information Files)
- PDB
- XYZ
- VRML
Spectra
Certain software packages allow the output from a spectrometer to be
saved in a form that can be manipulated on-line. The following format is
acceptable:
Movies
Movie clips can help present information on dynamic processes. Movie
files should be prepared with the idea of keeping the files size as small
as possible:
- Frame size 480 X 360 pixels
- Frame speed 12-15 per second
- Maximum data rate 150 kB/s
- Maximum file size 5 MB
The following are acceptable formats:
- MPEG (MPG 1 recommended)
- Quicktime (qt; Cinepak codec for compression, 256 color palette, quality
100%)
- Audio/Video Interleaved (avi)
