Please Note: This is a demo of the online version of Reagent Chemicals, 10th Edition. It has much of the functionality of the subscription version, however, access is only permitted to a few parts of the book. As new information becomes available, the Committee on Analytical Reagents updates the specifications in Reagent Chemicals and occasionally adds specifications for new reagents. If supplements are added to the online version of Reagent Chemicals, 10th Edition they will also be available from the demo site.

Other features include a CAS number index, a separate index for standard grade reference materials, updated atomic weights, frequently used mathematical equations, complete assay calculations with titer values, a tutorial on how to read a monograph, and detailed tables of contents introducing each section.

Reagent Chemicals, 10 Edition, was published in book form in September 2005, with the specifications official from January 1, 2006. This Web edition duplicates the printed book. It contains exactly the same information as the book, but incorporates electronic features (such as hypertext links) that enhance its usability.

Choice of Formats: The Web edition of Reagent Chemicals is available in both HTML and PDF formats.

Overview
Reagent Chemicals sets standards for the purity of reagent-grade chemicals and recommends the test methods for analyzing these chemicals. Information is organized in the following sections.

Introduction and Definitions. This section covers classical methods of analysis, interpretation of specifications, validation of analytical methods, method detection limits, and other considerations such as sampling, containers, added substances, blank tests, and eliminated test procedures.

Analytical Procedures and General Directions. The analytical procedures and general directions for most ACS specifications and tests are described in this section. Supplemental information may be obtained from one of the standard references on analytical chemistry listed in the bibliography.

Solutions and Mixtures Used in Tests. This section describes reagents, buffers, and indicators; control, standard, and stock solutions; and volumetric solutions.

Monographs for Reagent Chemicals. This section contains the general descriptions, specifications, and tests for reagent chemicals. Reagents are listed in alphabetical order and each reagent contains requirements (provided in tabular form) and tests for determining whether the reagent meets the purity requirements.

Monographs for Standard-Grade Reference Materials: Specifications and Tests. Specifications and analytical methods for standard-grade reference materials have been developed and were first introduced in the 9th Edition of Reagent Chemicals. The development of this new grade of chemicals was a result of needs from the analytical testing community.

Materials designated as standard grade are suitable for preparation of analytical standards used for a variety of applications including instrument calibration, quality control, analyte identification, and measuring method performance. These compounds are also suitable for other general applications requiring high-purity materials.

This section is formatted differently than “Monographs for Reagent Chemicals”. Rather than having an individual monograph for each standard-grade material, materials are grouped together by compound class. Each class has general specifications that are applicable to the entire group. In addition to assay requirements, standard-grade materials also have an identity requirement. The tests section includes analytical techniques and methods to support the specifications. Following the specifications and tests are tables of compound-specific information, including physical properties, analytical data, and references to analytical methods.

About the Supplements
As new information becomes available, the Committee on Analytical Reagents updates the specifications in Reagent Chemicals and occasionally adds specifications for new reagents. These updates are published as PDF files that show additions and deletions, as well as the effective date of the changes. All updates are available to users of both print and Web editions through the Reagent Chemicals website.

In the Web edition, you can access the updates in several ways.

1. Click on the "supplement" link at the bottom of the navigation bar. A browser window will open displaying the main supplement page, where you can see a list of reagents that have been updated.

2. Look up a reagent in the "Monographs for Reagent Chemicals" or "Monographs for Standard-Grade Reference Materials." If a reagent has been updated, you will be given a choice of the original, as-published HTML format or the updated PDF file.

3. When you open a reagent that has been updated, a red button will be visible. Click on the red button to link directly to the PDF file of the update.
