Laser
Ablation-ICPMS. (340 KB PDF)
In the early years of laser ablation, ion signals often did not represent the
sample composition because of a phenomenon called elemental fractionation, which
may occur during ablation, aerosol transport, or the atomization and ionization
processes within the ICP. Detlef Günther, Bodo Hattendorf, and Christopher
Latkoczy at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich discuss how the
laser and gas influence the aerosol size, resulting in a more accurate measurement.

Lectins:
Proteins That Interpret the Sugar Code. (288 KB PDF)
Although the most famous lectin is the poison ricin, these proteins have other
functions, such as intracellular protein trafficking and cell-cell recognition.
Carol Nilsson at Göteborg University (Sweden) focuses on the role of lectins
in elucidating protein-carbohydrate interactions. |
