Are Veterinary Medicines Causing Environmental Risks?
(384 KB PDF)
Little is known about how veterinary drugs or their metabolites affect the environment. Alistair B. A. Boxall at Cranfield Centre for EcoChemistry (U.K.), Dana W. Kolpin at the U.S. Geological Survey, Bent Halling-Sørensen of the Danish University of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Johannes Tolls of Henkel KGaA (Germany) list what is known and the questions that researchers still need to investigate.

Contaminant Bioavailability in Soil and Sediment (179 KB PDF)
Bioavailability—the extent to which organisms are susceptible to chemicals—could be an important factor in hazardous waste cleanups, but regulators and the public treat it with suspicion. After two years of deliberation, a National Research Council (NRC) report, summarized here by Laura Ehlers of NRC and Richard Luthy of Stanford University, lays out how bioavailability could play a role in cleanup risk assessments.
