The world is inevitably moving from a carbon-based economy to one based on hydrogen, according to a new report by the Worldwatch Institute. “The critical question is no longer whether we are headed toward hydrogen, but how we should get there, and how long it will take,” says Seth Dunn, author of Hydrogen Futures: Toward a Sustainable Energy System. The report discusses progressive government actions in Iceland, Germany, and Japan, and it documents recent developments in fuel cell and hydrogen delivery technologies by the automotive and energy industries. Because fuel cells may some day power cell phones and laptop computers, as well as automobiles and power plants, the report claims that there will be substantial commercial, political, and environmental benefits to both companies and countries that are first to market hydrogen technologies.
