Drinking Water
Classifying drinking water contaminants

Lists of drinking water contaminants for potential regulation should be “more defensible and transparent, and [their] development should take place with increased opportunities for public input and comment,” concludes a report by the U.S. National Research Council (NRC). The report evaluates approaches for generating future contaminant candidate lists, which U.S. EPA is required to publish every five years under the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments. The NRC panel also recommends that EPA incorporate the use of bioinformatics, genomics, and proteomics in identifying and assessing emerging waterborne pathogens.
