SO2 hot spots

While emissions of SO2 from power plants across the United States declined by 32% from 1990 to 2001, emissions in 16 states increased, according to an analysis from the Environmental Integrity Project, funded by the Rockefeller Family Fund. The report, which analyzes emissions from 600 power plants falling under Clean Air Act rules finds that emissions increased at 252 plants. These “hot spots”, where higher levels were recorded, occurred because owners purchased emission credits from companies that had significantly reduced their emissions, according to the report, “Particulate-Related Health Impacts of Emissions in 2001 From 41 Major U.S. Power Plants”.
