Blowing with the wind

Total installed wind energy capacity in Europe reached the 20,447 megawatt (MW) mark by October, making up 74% of the total global capacity, according to a new survey by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA). By comparison, current installed U.S. capacity stands at 4329 MW, according to the American Wind Energy Association. Roughly 84% of the European total is installed in Germany, Spain, and Denmark, with Germany commanding 10,650 MW, Spain 4079 MW, and Denmark 2515 MW. Wind energy now accounts for 18% of national electricity consumption in Denmark and 4% in Germany, EWEA finds. Additionally, nearly 80% of all wind turbines sold worldwide are manufactured by European companies. For more information, go to www.ewea.org.
