Green power purchasers recognized
The city of Chicagos commitment to purchase 20% of its energy from renewable wind and solar power sources by 2007 earned it a green power leadership award this week. Presented by the U.S. EPA, U.S. Department of Energy, and the Center for Resource Solutions, a nonprofit organization, the awards recognize organizations that have made notable commitments to renewable energy. Kinkos, Inc., the national chain of photocopy shops, earned an award for the second year in a row, this year for purchasing 15.6 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy in 10 states. The awards also honored Advanced Micro Devices (Austin, Tex.), the state of New Jersey, Pennsylvania State University (University Park, Pa.), the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Pa.), Johnson & Johnson (facilities in Calif., Tex., and N.J.), Californias County of Alameda for its Santa Rita Jail, the Uinta Brewery (Salt Lake City, Utah), and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 332 (San Jose, Calif.).
