Survey describes toxics in fish tissue
The concentrations of 265 persistent bioaccumulative toxics in fish tissue from the first random nationwide U.S. survey are now available on the U.S. EPAs website. Over a four-year period, EPA is collecting fish from 500 lakes and reservoirs and analyzing tissue for metals, dioxins and furans, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Most of the chemicals were detected in this first round of samples, taken in 2000, except for PAHs and organophosphate pesticides. EPA aims to provide a baseline to track the progress of pollution control efforts and identify toxic hotspots in the countrys lakes, 23% of which are under fish consumption advisories. The National Study of Chemical Residues in Lake Fish Tissue can be viewed at www.epa.gov/waterscience/fishstudy.
