U.S. DoD to fund perchlorate treatment demonstration projects

Beginning in 2005, the U.S. Department of Defense will fund multiple demonstration projects for treating perchlorate in drinking water, through the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP). The objective is to evaluate alternative technologies that can significantly reduce the costs of removing perchlorate for large-scale drinking-water treatment facilities. The demonstrations will be conducted at various public water supply utilities in southern California impacted by perchlorate contamination, and projects will be selected through a competitive process. Pre-proposals are due November 18. For more information, go to www.estcp.org.
