Warming up to climate change

A public opinion poll reveals that a majority of Americans support government action to deal with global warming.

More than half of Americans (58%) think climate change will have a “great to extreme” impact on their children’s future, according to a new poll conducted by the Earth Day Network (EDN).

EDN, an organization founded by the creators of Earth Day, telephoned 1020 Americans just before the November midterm elections that handed control of Congress to the Democrats. The survey revealed a partisan divide in public opinion, with 63% of Democrats saying it is “very to extremely important” for candidates to have a plan to deal with global warming, compared with 27% of Republicans and 47% of independents.

The poll found majority support across party lines for at least some government actions to combat warming, with 61% stating that it is “very to extremely” important for Congress to tighten fuel efficiency standards in automobiles.
