ACS Publications: High Quality, High Impact

Help with Electronic Supporting Information Access

Electronic Supporting Information is published for many articles appearing in ACS journals, providing details that are too voluminous to be printed in the journals themselves. Supporting Information is available by clicking on the "supporting info" button from a journal's Home Page, by clicking on the "Supporting Info" link in a journal's Table of Contents, or by using the Citation Find feature of the ACS Journals Search page.

In general, Supporting Information is loaded on the publication date of the journal. If you cannot find the Supporting Information for an article after two days from the publication date or cannot retrieve it, please send e-mail to journalhelp@acs.org, specifying the problem.

Some articles may include graphic files, animation files, executable computer programs, PostScript files, ASCII files, word processing files, experimental data in a standard format (e.g., crystallographic parameters in CIF format), etc. These files should be downloaded, saved to disk, and opened with software that supports the corresponding file format. Version 4.0 or later of either Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer are required in order to access Supporting Information via the ACS Publications Division website.

Note: Supporting Information should be submitted through the ACS Paragon System.

Filenames and Program Extensions

Supporting information file extensions indicate the file type. For example, a "pdf" extension indicates that the file has been stored in Adobe's PDF format. Some other common extensions are "cif" for Crystallographic Information File, "ps" for PostScript, "msw" for Microsoft Word, "rtf" for Microsoft's Rich Text Format, "exe" for certain executable files, "txt" for ASCII text, "zip" for zipped files, and "pdb" for Protein Data Bank files. Configuring Your Web Browser

In many cases, your operating system will automatically allow you to view files because it recognizes the file type by the associated extension or suffix. However, if you have downloaded or installed an external or "helper" application, you may need to integrate it with your Web browser by defining new data types and associating specific applications with various file formats.

PDF (Portable Document Format) Files

Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher is recommended for viewing Portable Document Format (PDF) files. The reader is available free of charge from the Adobe Systems website.

WMF (Windows Meta Files)

Windows Meta Files (WMF) can be opened using Microsoft Word. Save the file to a local computer drive. With Microsoft Word running, open a new blank file. From Word's main menu, choose "Insert—Picture—From File..." Navigate to the desired file and click "Insert".
