About the Cover: Natural products are an important source of biologically active compounds and drugs. However, analyzing these chemicals has remained problematic because of their low abundance and limited powers of analytical techniques. Dossey et al. (p 511) cleverly make use of small-diameter samples and cryogenics to analyze the secretions from individual walking stick insects (Anisomorpha buprestoides) by NMR. In addition to identifying compounds not previously known to be present in A. buprestoides, the authors observed stereochemical differences in secretions between individual walking sticks of the this species. Pictured on the cover is another species of walking stick, Diapheromera femorata, which is not known to produce a defensive venom. Image © Joe McDonald / Visuals Unlimited.
