About the Cover:

This month's cover features the spurge hawkmoth caterpillar (Hyles euphorbiae) on cypress spurge (Euphorbia cyparissias), one of its host plants. The caterpillar "chemist" extracts terpene-containing juices from this toxic plant and then uses them against predators. One of these active agents is shown in the structure. Since the caterpillar will only feed on plants containing these toxins, it can be used as a weed-control agent. This animal and many other insect chemists are discussed by Batra in an article beginning on page 121.
