About the Cover:

The cover demonstrates the generation of the Raman effect using a high power Nd:YAG pulsed laser. The laser pulse is used to excite hydrogen gas (at ~300 psi) which is contained in the long steel cell on the right. The two major Raman-shifted frequencies generated (~683 nm and ~436 nm), using the 2nd harmonic of the Nd:YAG laser (532 nm), correspond to a single vibrational level in the H2 molecule. These two frequencies correspond to the Stokes and anti-Stokes components of the vibration that occurs at ~4146 cm-1 in molecular hydrogen. This technique was used to generate the excitation frequency used in the picosecond experiments described in the text.
