About the Cover:

The cover, illustrating a biochemical switchboard of the type discussed by Ross (page 937), shows the proposed orientation of the beta-adrenergic receptor with respect to the plasma membrane. Its most prominent structural feature is a bundle of seven hydrophobic, membrane-spanning helices. This motif is shared by a large family of cell-surface receptors that utilize GTP-binding proteins ("G proteins") to convey extracellular hormone signals to intracellular effector proteins. Amino acid residues shown in red or purple are either identical or similar to the homologous residues in rhodopsin, another G protein-coupled receptor. Homology is concentrated in the receptor's hydrophobic core, which is sufficient for both hormone binding and signaling activity.
