About the Cover:

This month's cover features one of the receptor-ligand interactions that can be analyzed by the methods described by Attie and Raines in an article starting on page 119. The structure shows a receptor bound to a ligand. The receptor is ribonuclease A, a much studied enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of the P-O5' bond of RNA. The ligand is uridine 2', 3'-cyclic vanadate (U>v), an analog of the transition state of the enzymatic reaction. For clarity, the sidechain of Phe120 and the uracil base of U>v are not shown. This figure is able to depict protons in addition to other atoms because it was refined at 2.0 A from neutron (R-factor = 0.207) as well a X-ray (R-factor = 0.191) diffraction data.
