The devices on this month's cover are illustrations from a 900-year old text that is itself a translation of a text from 300 AD that has long been believed lost. The discovery of the manuscript and its contents are described by El Khadem on page 774. These exotic looking and yet familiar devices strikingly connect modern methods to the very early development of chemistry.
