Chemistry is a major contributor to ever-increasing performance in track and field and in many other sports. Guinevere A. Giffin, Steven R. Boone, Renee S. Cole, and Scott E. McKay summarize a broad range of applications of chemistry in sports in their article, "Modern Sport and Chemistry: What a Chemically Aware Sports Fanatic Should Know" (pp 813-819). Their compilation of product names, compositions, chemical structures, and advantageous properties is a treasure-trove of interesting information for teachers and students.
