Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The 2003 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Paul C. Lauterbur and Peter Mansfield for the development of MRI, and a review of their work is given by Charles G. Fry. In 1973 Lauterbur published NMR methods to show how variations in the strength of a magnetic field could be used to provide spatial information. The cover features a near-reproduction of Lauterbur's original work. The diagram in the foreground shows a sample consisting of two water-filled capillaries inserted into a 5-mm NMR tube. Magnetic field gradients are applied within the x,y plane at various angles; the resulting 72 spectra taken at every 5° are shown in the background.
