About the Cover:
Chiral Crystallization. The optical rotation of a large single crystal (28 mm x 24 mm x 5.0 mm) of levorotatory ethylenediamine sulphate is displayed by viewing polarized white light transmitted by the crystal through a Polaroid sheet. The photographs from left to right and top to bottom show a clockwise rotation of the top Polaroid sheet in increments of 30°. Similar experiments with quartz crystals led Jean Baptiste Biot to the discovery of optical rotation. See the article "Chiral Crystallization of Ethylenediamine Sulfate" by Lawrence Koby, Jyothi B. Ningappa, Maria Dakessian, Louis A. Cuccia.
