About the Cover: The cover shows several UV photoluminescence (PL) images of lasing from single nanowires (upper left, lower right) and nanoribbons (upper right, lower left). The single nanowires (diameter 50-200 nm) and nanoribbons (thickness 50-500 nm) are isolated and optically pumped by a pulsed femtosecond source that, in some cases, induces stimulated emission in the active cavities formed by the facets of the nanostructure. Both transient PL and pump-probe second-haromonic generation are utilized in novel experiments aimed at elucidating the ultrafast carrier dynamics associated with the lasing phenomenon exhibited by the individual structures.
