Information for Authors

Overview

Note

ACS Publications uses CrossCheck's iThenticate software to detect instances of similarity in submitted manuscripts. Your manuscript may be screened for similarity to published material. Learn more.

Two Ways to Submit

Manuscripts for articles or commentaries may only be submitted in one of two ways including:

An Invitation – Authors who receive an invitation to submit a manuscript should follow the instructions for “Preparation of Manuscripts” section of the Author Guidelines.

or

A Proposal – Authors who do not receive a specific invitation should first submit a proposal following the instructions for “Preparation of Proposals” section of the Author Guidelines.

Authors are encouraged to use the Document Templates below for preparing manuscripts for submission as well as for preparing final, accepted manuscripts.

See also How to Submit a Manuscript for complete information on acceptable software, preparing and submitting manuscripts using TeX/LaTeX, correct preparation of graphics, etc.

Manuscript Transfer Service

Sometimes an ACS journal editor finds that a submitted manuscript is more suitable for a different ACS journal. The Manuscript Transfer Service allows the author(s) to transfer the manuscript and submission details to another ACS journal without restarting the entire submission process. See complete description.

Supplementary Cover Art

ACS Publications now offers a great way to promote your work on a supplementary journal cover. If your article is accepted for publication, you can submit your idea for a cover of the journal and that suggestion may be selected for one of the journal’s additional supplementary covers. See complete description.

Document Templates

Use of a template is encouraged but not mandatory. The template facilitates the peer review process by allowing authors to place artwork and tables close to the point where they are discussed within the text.

Please use U.S. Letter (8 1/2" by 11") paper size setting in the word processing program as the original document page size for preparation of all manuscripts. Do not use A4 or other size paper settings.

For authors that are submitting a Conspectus with their manuscript, please utilize the Guidelines for Table of Contents/Conspectus Graphics [PDF] and follow the “Conspectus” instructions in the Author Guidelines.
