Celebrating 50 Years of Surface Enhanced Spectroscopy

Fifty years after a couple scientists decided to “roughen” their silver electrode to increase the available surface area for adsorption, researchers are still benefiting from the surprising findings in the experiment. This special issue celebrates those observations, which marked the first published surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) experiments. The research included here involves novel optical and photocatalytic materials, new fundamental insights, and a large number of interdisciplinary applications ranging from food security to biomedical devices. Utilizing modern statistical methods and machine learning, SERS will continue to play a major role in analytical devices and applications, solidifying its role among the most important nanotechnology tools shaping our future. The Special Issue includes articles published in Analytical Chemistry, The Journal of Physical Chemistry C, or ACS Omega.
